During the House Intelligence Committee’s hearing on Monday regarding the Trump campaign ties to Russia, Rep. Adam Schiff of California made an arguably damning statement.
The California representative outlined a timeline of events that linked Trump campaign officials, including former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and former campaign manager Paul Manafort, to officials within the Russian government.
Schiff also showcased the way in which Trump campaign officials lobbied to change the Republican Party platform to fit their needs — deleting a section that endorsed sending weapons to Ukraine. This change served to be of great benefit to the Russian government.
The representative also explained the way that Russian intelligence agencies carefully leaked information that would damage then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
In conclusion, Schiff determined that all of these contacts could very well be coincidence, but nevertheless they are enough to demand a comprehensive investigation.
“Is it possible that all of these events and reports are completely unrelated, and nothing more than an entirely unhappy coincidence? Yes, it is possible. But it is also possible, maybe more than possible, that they are not coincidental, not disconnected and not unrelated, and that the Russians used the same techniques to corrupt U.S. persons that they have employed in Europe and elsewhere. We simply don’t know, not yet, and we owe it to the country to find out.”
