One of the most powerful moments of the presidential debate was when Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton mentioned a Miss Universe winner who allegedly Donald Trump derided because she gained weight after winning the contest.
As Trump kept interrupting her and asking “where did you find that?” Clinton was undeterred. She continued on with her point recounting how Trump called her “Miss Piggy” and “Miss Housekeeping,” and as Trump interrupted her again seemingly perplexed that Clinton had found out about the matter, Clinton thundered:
“Her name is Alicia Machado. She has become a U.S. citizen, and you can bet she will be voting in November.”
Trump’s interruptions only highlighted the power of Clinton’s message. The Clinton campaign followed that up with a video showing Machado recounting her ordeal.
In the video which is just over two minutes long, Ms. Machado states that she was the first Miss Universe winner after Trump acquired the company. She goes on to say that Trump “was overwhelming. I was very scared of him.” She talks about Trump yelling at her and saying that she looked “ugly” or “fat,” and would refer to her as “Miss Piggy” or “Miss Housekeeping.”
What was not disclosed in Monday night’s debate is Ms. Machado’s claim that her contract entitled her to 10% of the money that she brought into the company. She claims that she “participated in the ad campaigns more than most,” and worked on projects for the company. She claims that she has never been paid the money she was entitled to under her contract.
She also speaks of how humiliated she felt when Trump made a press event out of the exercise program which he forced her to do because he claimed that she had gained weight. Machado also makes a startling disclosure when she speaks about the years of bouts that she had with eating disorders.
Twenty years later, Alicia Machado has managed to persevere and overcome the damage that Trump inflicted on her. She is a well-known actress throughout Latin America. And as of last night, as Citizen Machado, she is one loud vote for Mrs. Clinton.
