After only two years of marriage following their twelve-year relationship, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are filing for divorce. Jolie filed the divorce documents on September 19, 2016, citing irreconcilable differences.
“Angelina Jolie Pitt has filed for dissolution of the marriage,” Jolie’s representative said in a statement to US Tuesday, September 20. “This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting at this time, and asks that the family be given their privacy during this difficult time.”
Jolie is requesting physical custody of their six children. She is not requesting joint physical custody, reportedly only wanting Pitt to have visitation rights. TMZ has reported that Jolie did not approve of the way Pitt was raising the children, causing many to speculate that the divorce will be tabloid friendly and unfriendly to the kids.
Despite this, a source close to them said that the couple wants an amicable breakup. “Other than the fame of the people involved, this is like so many other divorces,” the source said.
US Weekly first reported tension between the couple in June over whether to sell their estate in France. Pitt wanted to keep the property, while Jolie wanted to relinquish it, citing that she was “ramping up her efforts in the political world.”
Jolie is a United Nations Special Envoy for refugee issues, which will be a critical topic at the upcoming UN General Assembly Meeting in New York this week. Some felt the timing of her divorce was an unfortunate coincidence, taking the spotlight off of the Assembly and onto herself.
The more prevalent response has been one of mass hysteria.

The opposite is true as well, characterized by the rise of the Jennifer Anniston Meme. Anniston was previously married to Pitt before Jolie, splitting with him shortly after Jolie and Pitt made the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith together, causing a stir.
