Officials in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Monday night confirmed that there are “multiple fatalities” in a deadly school bus crash.

The school bus was carrying 35 children when at about 4 p.m., it crashed, hitting a utility pole and wrapping around a tree. It was the only vehicle involved in the crash. Police told local TV station WREG that the bus driver is cooperating and it is unclear what caused the crash.

WREG also reports that at least 12 children have been killed in the crash with officials cautioning that this is not going to be the final tally. Officials later told the Associated Press that there were six fatalities.

The vehicle was so badly damaged that it took crews over an hour to get the last of the victims freed. At least 23 children have been taken to the hospital. The condition of those in the hospital is not yet known.

“Our hearts go out, as well as the hearts of all the people around me, to the family, the neighborhood, the school and all the people involved in this,” said Police Chief Fred Fletcher, standing with local officials. “We assure you we’re doing everything we can to help everybody be as safe as they can, get the care they need, and get the support they need.”

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that Fletcher called the situation “every public safety professional’s worst nightmare.” It reported that “those who weren’t rushed to the hospital walked away clutching their parents’ hands, looking dazed with cuts on their faces.”

Governor Bill Haslam called the crash a “tragic event.”

“We’re going to do everything we can to assist in any way. It’s a sad situation anytime there’s a school bus with children involved, which there is in this case.”

Pictures posted on social media showed the bus on its side, apparently either split by a large tree or wrapped around it.
