At a fundraising event in New York City on Friday, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton called half of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s followers part of the “basket of deplorables.”
Mr. Trump is now demanding that Clinton apologize for her comments. Trump took to Twitter to voice his disapproval, saying:
“Wow, Hillary Clinton was SO INSULTING to my supporters, millions of amazing, hard working people. I think it will cost her at the Polls!”

Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s campaign manager, also had an exchange on twitter with spokesman for the Clinton campaign Nick Merrill where she stated,
“Come to an event; talk to real people who aren’t donors. Or better: have Hillary apologize.”
Nick, it's simply untrue. Come to an event; talk to real people who aren't donors. Or better: have Hillary apologize https://t.co/DdBFhWgav5

Clinton made the comments after she urged the audience at the event — an event for LGBT for Hillary — to “not get complacent” after her opponent’s most recent inappropriate comments.
According to Politico,
“You know,” Clinton said at the LGBT event, “to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables.”
“Right?” Clinton said as the crowd laughed and applauded.
“The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic — you name it,” Clinton continued. “And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people — now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric.”
