According to the New York Times, a new study conducted by researchers at California State University, San Bernardino shows a sharp increase in hate crimes against two groups.
The study claims that hate crimes against Muslims and transgender people rose sharply in 2015.
The findings are based on police reports from 20 states. The study found that just about 260 hate crimes against Muslims in the United States were reported in 2015 — a whopping 78% increase since 2014. Even more troubling is the fact that it’s the highest rate of incidents since 2001.
The study’s researchers explained to the New York Times that these numbers are likely not very accurate due to widespread under-reporting of hate crimes, coupled with misclassification that often occurs.
Hate crimes against transgender people rose by 40% in 2015 as well. As Jezebel reports,
“It’s previously been reported by the Human Rights Campaign that 2015 was the deadliest year on record for gender-nonconforming people, and that trans women of color are “exponentially” more likely to experience violence, harassment, and discrimination.”
