As Vice President Joe Biden is on his way out of the office as the new administration transitions into the White House, he is starting to get back to some of his old hobbies.
The VP is a big fan of his vintage 1971 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible — one of the classic American muscle cars.
Biden is appearing in a special episode of Jay Leno’s Garage with one of his former foes, retired General Colin Powell — the former Secretary of State under George W. Bush — who recently received a 2015 Corvette Stingray Z51 from his children.
The Vice President actually is not allowed to drive a car during not just during his term, but until six months after he leaves office. However, the Secret Service makes an exception to the rule for him to appear on the show.
Before the faceoff, Biden got to cruise down the street with Leno by his side in his beloved Corvette, which was a wedding gift his father gave to him. At the time, the car was worth about $5,600; now it’s worth almost $80,000. His Stingray goes zero to 60 in about 4.7 seconds, blindingly fast, especially for a car made in 1971.
As the two were cruising, another car suddenly gets behind them from a side street. It’s another Corvette — a new, faster one. Biden says “I wonder who that cowboy is?”
A few moments later, the ‘cowboy’ passes them, giving them a glimpse of the 2015 Corvette Stingray Z51. As the two pull next to each other, the identity of the driver of the mystery Corvette is revealed as none other than the former Secretary of State.
Powell shows off his third Corvette, this one a Christmas gift last year from his children. He jokes “They sent me the friggin’ bill.”
The men then challenge each other to a road race. “Try to keep up as best you can, Mr. Vice President,” says Powell.
