Ohio Governor John Kasich vetoed the ‘Heartbeat Bill,’ but he signed another insidious bill into law that threatens access to abortion in the state.
While he may not have signed the so-called ‘Heartbeat Bill’ into law, as was expected, Kasich signed SB 127 instead — a 20-week ban on abortion. The bill was sponsored by Ohio Right to Life.
SB 127 is just as detrimental to abortion rights in Ohio, if not more so, than the ‘Heartbeat Bill.’ It has no exception for incest, rape, fetal anomalies, or a woman’s mental health. The only exception: the life of the mother. As it stands, current Ohio state law forbids abortion after the 24th week of pregnancy and there are exceptions for incest, rape, and the health of the mother. The laws on abortion in the state are among the strictest in the nation and the 20-week ban is just the latest legislative move to further limit the reproductive freedom of women.
