Comedian Jimmy Kimmel weighed in Thursday night on President Trump’s budget proposal, which includes hefty cuts to virtually all sectors of government, outside of the military and Homeland Security.
Kimmel’s focus was the large cuts to public broadcasting, choosing to deliver his message by doing a “The Celebrity Apprentice” parody featuring President Trump and the ‘Sesame Street’ character Big Bird.
Trump “has already started clearing house at PBS,” Kimmel said as he discussed the budget during his monologue. The program then cut to an edited clip from an episode of ‘Apprentice’ with Big Bird across the board room table from him.
“I say, you’re fired,” Trump said to Big Bird in the clip. “What?” the yellow feathered giant replied.
“You’re a quitter and Star Jones kicked your ass whether you like it or not,” Trump responded. Jones was one of the contestants in the 2011 season of ‘The Celebrity Apprentice.’
“I guess we have to find a new place to live,” Big Bird says. “That’s too bad, but that’s the way it goes,” Trump answers.
Before he gets rid of ‘Sesame Street,’ I think we should make the president watch it a couple of times,” Kimmel told his audience.
“That show teaches so many things he needs to know: which thing is bigger than the other, how to spell, the importance of telling the truth and sharing, listening to others. Maybe throw in some ‘Schoolhouse Rock,’ and he can find out how government works. Let’s get on that.”
Kimmel also went after the President for proposing to defund Meals on Wheels, while he, himself, takes nearly weekly visits to his Mar-a-Lago resort spending millions of taxpayer dollars on each trip. “Meals on Wheels is out, but don’t worry, the golf trips to Mar-a-Lago every weekend, those will not stop.”
Trump’s budget proposal has received significant bipartisan criticism — though not necessarily the same criticism.
