Recently released documents showcase the fact that the Department of Defense warned former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn against taking money from foreign governments. However, this did not deter him from doing so.
According to CNN, the newly released documents show that the former Trump National Security Adviser was warned by the Defense Intelligence Agency to abstain from accepting cash from foreign governments as early as 2014, when he entered retirement. Despite this, he continued to accept money from both the Turkish and Russian governments for speeches and lobbying.
Rep. Elijah Cummings released the documents on Thursday. He explained,
“These documents raise grave questions about why General Flynn concealed the payments he received from foreign sources after he was warned explicitly by the Pentagon. Our next step is to get the documents we are seeking from the White House so we can complete our investigation. I thank the Department of Defense for providing us with unclassified versions of these documents.”
Cummings also explained in a statement about the documents that the DIA letter “counters the suggestion by Flynn’s attorney on Tuesday that Flynn followed appropriate procedures for accepting foreign funds for his trip to Moscow.”
