Donations to Planned Parenthood have reportedly spiked to 40 times the normal rate in the six weeks since now President-elect Donald Trump was elected.
Seventy percent of donors had never given to Planned Parenthood before and roughly half of them are millennials, a spokesman for the organization told The Guardian.
The Guardian reports,
One man wrote a check for $10,000 to an organization that helps women get elected to office, saying he was “embarrassed” that Donald Trump won the presidential election.
Someone else walked into the office of an organization advocating for immigrant rights and handed over a bag of cash he had just collected from members of his local community civics group.
Many are strategically allocating their charitable donations as they gear up for the anticipated $400 million cut to Medicaid funds to Planned Parenthood when Republicans gain control of the House, Senate, and White House in January — and Planned Parenthood is not the only organization raking in donations for this reason. The American Civil Liberties Union has also had a record number of individual donations — roughly 300,000 — totaling to nearly $23,000,000.
“This is always our big time of year, but this year it’s huge. Instead of giving gifts, people are making donations to causes they believe in.”
