The Republican National Committee will reportedly hold its annual Christmas Party at the Trump International Hotel in Washington D.C. this year.
As the Huffington Post reports that two GOP sources confirmed the event details and that the event is said to be “a more exclusive and celebratory affair this year owing to the unexpected election victories enjoyed by the party this November.”
However, the fact that the RNC is holding their Christmas Party at Trump’s newest hotel further legitimizes claims that the President-elect is leveraging his newly discovered political power for personal, albeit financial, gain. This is especially troubling in light of the fact that Mr. Trump has yet to publicly announce his plans for his businesses when he takes office in January.
Whether or not he will transfer his business empire once he takes office is still up in the air. However, the New York Times reported on Wednesday night that Trump plans to step down from his post while still maintaining a stake in the company.
Trump’s newest hotel has been at the forefront of controversy as well. Just earlier this week, the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, hosted a reception at the D.C. hotel featuring Vice President-elect Mike Pence. Foreign diplomats have also expressed that they feel pressure to stay at Trump International while in D.C., simply due to the fact that they believe not staying would send a bad message to the incoming administration.
