During the October 23 edition of MSNBC’s AM Joy, Media Matters’ Eric Boehlert explained that Breitbart could take over the GOP just as Fox News did.
JOY REID (HOST): Eric, there’s the possibility that he could even maybe take away some of Fox News’ audience. I mean there has been a somewhat of a backlash against at least some of Fox News’ on-air personalities for not being devoted enough to Donald Trump, so in theory let’s say Sean Hannity didn’t re-up at Fox and went over to this Trump TV network. For instance, Alex Jones who is making a significant amount of money doing his own… rather insane online play. He could do a show there. I mean there is enough of sort a — we’ll call it a talent base that he could create enough programming for him to do that, right?
ERIC BOEHLERT: Right, if we saw the Fox take over the Republican party in the the last 5 or 10 years now, are we going to see the Breitbart taking over the Republican Party? I mean this is going to become a truly fringe operation if the Republican Party is going to go down sort of a Breitbart TV, Trump TV. Look, Fox TV has been on air 20 years. They basically have 3 million people who tune in each year. I don’t know. Do more than 10 or 20 percent who watch Fox News and say, “It’s not conservative enough,” “They don’t hit Obama enough,” “I wish I could find someone who despises Hillary the way I despise Hillary.” I don’t know maybe there is. I don’t sense a lot of an overlap. A couple other things. You know when he loses in a landslide, it’s tough to brand yourself going forward when you just suffered possibly one of the biggest defeats 20, 30, 40, 50 years. You’re not going to come out of this as like a hero or something. So, I don’t know I think there are major hurdles ahead.
