Chelsea Clinton on Monday seemed to be in a state of disbelief after the newly sworn in Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson described slaves who were brought over to the North American Continent as “immigrants.”

Earlier on Monday, speaking before his department’s employees, the retired neurosurgeon referred to slaves as “immigrants’ dreaming of a better life.

“That’s what America is about. A land of dreams and opportunity,” Carson said. “There were other immigrants who came here in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less.”

“But they, too, had a dream that one day their sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters [and] great-granddaughters might pursue prosperity and happiness in this land,” he added.

The former first daughter tweeted her reaction to Carson’s comments: “This can’t be real. Slaves were not & are not immigrants. 2017.”

While Carson’s confirmation was largely without controversy, many Democrats questioned whether his lack of government experience made him unqualified for the position.

In fact, Carson, himself, expressed doubt in his qualifications earlier this year, taking himself out of the running for any Trump Cabinet positions. However, that was before the President tapped him for the HUD position.

This is not the first time that Carson has been the subject of controversy based on comments and comparisons he has made about slavery. During his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, he compared abortion and slavery.

“During slavery – and I know that’s one of those words you’re not supposed to say, but I’m saying it – during slavery, a lot of slave owners thought they had a right to do whatever they wanted to the slave,” he told Chuck Todd on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press.’

“What if the abolitionists had said, ‘I don’t believe in slavery, I think it’s wrong, but you guys do whatever you want to do?’” he added. Carson opposes abortion even in cases involving incest or rape.

If slaves heading for America were immigrants, then convicts bound for Australia must have been tourists! I think it’s time for Ben to take his meds and have a nap. Could someone organise one of the nursing staff to look after Ben?
