HBO’s John Oliver opened last night’s edition of “Last Week Tonight” by shedding light on a series of events that occurred this week in the Trump White House.
Oliver explained how the week began on a good note for the President after he addressed Congress on Tuesday night and media outlets were quick to compliment him, many saying it was a powerful and “presidential” moment.
However, that didn’t last long. Less than a day later, media outlets began reporting that Attorney General Jeff Sessions had met with the Russian Ambassador to the United States twice prior to the November election — indicating that he had lied at this senate confirmation hearing. Oliver poked fun at the fact that Sessions hadn’t even been asked if he had communicated with the Russians, he simply volunteered the information, saying it was equivalent to someone being asked how their weekend was and responding by saying, “well, I definitely wasn’t masturbating into the Slurpee machine at the 7-ll. He then said that if a situation like that happens, “you check the f*cking security cameras at the 7-11 and you don’t act surprised.”
While discussing the several members of the Trump team that have been involved with Russia, Oliver explained,
“It is not clear what is really going on here, yet, although one possibility is that this all amounts to what I’m going to call ‘Stupid Watergate’ — a potential scandal with all of the intrigue of Watergate except everyone involved is really bad at everything.”
