The opening Saturday Night Live sketch which fans have become so accustomed to over the years took a somber tone on the first post election SNL.
Kate McKinnon, who has played Hillary Clinton on the show for the past few seasons, appeared again in character, this time sitting behind a grand piano as she started playing.
The actress was portraying a defeated Clinton as she sang ‘Hallelujah,’ the timeless classic by the legendary Leonard Cohen, who passed away this week at the age of 83.
The most emotional part came on the last verse McKinnon sang “I did my best, it wasn’t much. I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch. I told the truth, I didn’t come to fool ya. And even though it all went wrong, I’ll stand before the Lord of Song with nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.”
The SNL star finishes the sketch by turning to her audience and directly addressing them, “I’m not giving up, and neither should you,” she said with her voice clearly quivering. “And live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”
