Fox’s Shep Smith blasted U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday after Trump attempted to blame the network for his claim that former President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower prior to the November 2016 election.
Smith began, setting the record straight, by explaining,
“Fox News cannot confirm Judge Napolitano’s commentary. Fox News knows of no evidence of any kind that the now-President of the United States was surveilled at any time, in any way, full stop.”
On Tuesday, Fox News legal analyst Andrew Napolitano said that Obama may have ordered the GCHQ, a British intelligence agency, to spy on the U.S. President.
In a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Trump was pressed about the fact that White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer repeated the claim during Thursday’s White House press briefing. In response, Trump completely deflected responsibility for his accusations against the former president and insisted the legal analyst was “the one responsible for saying that on television.” The President continued, “you shouldn’t be talking to me, you should be talking to Fox.”
However, Smith repeated,
“Fox News know of no evidence of any kind that the president was surveilled in any way, at any time… It just feels off the rails.”
