As Reuters reports, it has cost New York City roughly $24 million to provide security at Trump Tower in Manhattan from Election Day to Inauguration Day alone.
That amounts to $308,000 per day, according to New York’s Police commissioner.
This startling fact has renewed calls for Congress to reimburse New York City for the cost of protecting Trump’s home on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue. The President’s wife, Melania, and son, Barron, still reside there.
Spokeswoman for Mayor Bill de Blasio Freddi Goldstein wrote in an email to Reuters, “we are seeking full federal reimbursement for all costs incurred related to security for President Trump and his family at Trump Tower.”
James O’Neill, New York City Police Chief said in a statement that, “Trump Tower itself now presents a target to those who wish to commit acts of terror against our country, further straining our limited counterterrorism resources.”
In December, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio asked the federal government for $35 million to cover security costs for protecting Mr. Trump at Trump Tower. However, the ultimate total ended up being less than that at $24 million.
The cost to cover security at Trump Tower is significantly less when the President is not in New York. When just Melania and Barron are at the residence, security will cost between $127,000 and $145,000.
The President has not returned to Manhattan since his inauguration in January.
