Ghazala Khan appeared with her husband, Khizr Khan, at the Democratic National Convention to talk about their son, a Muslim American killed in combat in Iraq. Without a doubt, Mr. Khan delivered the most compelling and eloquent rebuking of Trump at the convention.
However, Mrs. Khan was silent during the speech. Donald Trump would later attribute her silence to Islam. She wasn’t having it.
Mrs. Khan took to news outlets to directly address Mr. Trump’s bigoted comments. He criticized her for not speaking, but it’s not certain that he knew exactly what he was getting into.
“Sacrifice, I don’t think he knows the meaning of sacrifice… Because when I was standing there, all America felt my pain. Without saying a single word. Everybody felt that pain… I am very upset when I heard when he said that I didn’t say anything. I was in pain… If you were in pain you fight or you don’t say anything, I’m not a fighter, I can’t fight. So the best thing I do was quiet.”
Users on Twitter immediately jumped to Khan’s defense with praise for her courageous response.
Right now Trump is wishing he had never picked a fight with Ghazala Khan.

Khizr and Ghazala Khan are the real MVPs. The real heroes. Humayun Khan is a true American and patriot. May they find peace in God.

Ghazala Khan to MSNBC: "Don't become [a] hero for me. Just be my son. Come back as a son. He came back as a hero." So, yeah. She's spoken.

A mother's loss and pain doesn't need to be explained. Something all candidates should know. https://t.co/RRYRICqkmJ

#GhazalaKhan. Wouldn't it be perfect if this woman saved us from Donald Trump.

I’m pretty sure Donald Trump will beg Russia to take down and silence #GhazalaKhan.
